Demon Days - Gorillaz (2005) 9/10

I can't remember the first time I listened to any of the songs from this album, but it's always been a favorite for me throughout my childhood and into adulthood.

Gorillaz really done (and continue to do) so much innovation in how fictional artists are presented and creating lore around them, however I think the continued insistance to put strong political beliefs at the forefront of incredibly entertaining music has had an even bigger cultural benefit.

The entertaining visuals, music and lore attached to this particular album cycle definitely had an impact on the quality of music I tend to expect nowadays and I'm glad I get to feel nostalgic about such a well crafted album.

Favorite Songs:

1. Feel Good Inc.

Talk about a club classic. If you're not on your feet tonight dancing. I don't know what'll make you.

It was actually really hard trying to decide between the top two spots but I think this one just edges out. Each verse if perfectly built up to and I don't think it's possible to not be dancing away to the rap verses.

I really like that this song is about actively ignoring the world in order to have mindless fun. If you don't listen to the lyrics, this song will help you have a good time and if you do, you'll maybe be stuck asking yourself questions for a good while.

Also for all my doccy who fans, Martha canonically enjoys working to this song. If you don't like Feel Good Inc, you don't like Martha Jones and if you don't like Martha Jones you're a loser.

2. DARE

"It's dare (uh)"

I love this song so much. The dance vibes never seem to have escaped the public consciousness and the upbeat nature is such a breath of fresh air on a project that indulges in cynicism and general hopelessness.

As much as I think Feel Good Inc. hasnt aged, I feel DARE has avoided aging by feeling very of its time and is often seen as an idealized time capsule of what British pop music sounded like in the 00's.

I'm probably being dumb but I like that I don't know if this song is potentially refencing how some British accents (including my own) will say "there" as "dare" and the "uh" at the end of each "it's dare" feels like a holy experience to me.

3. El Mañana

The melancholy nature of this song almost makes it feel peaceful. Even if you're hopeful for a better tomorrow, even if you're cynical about tomorrow, today feels like a write off and this song feels like it's at peace with that mindset.

Very "doomer" song, but sometimes feeling defeated and hopeless in the moment will make tomorrow that big easier to process.
