Shawn - Shawn Mendes (2024) 5/10

I'll be honest, I've never really engaged with Shawn Mendes' music outside of his singles that have been playing in public spaces. Between rumours of him being broke, in a cult, continued speculation on his sexuality and two of his high profile exes allegedly throwing jabs at one another recently, Shawn has remained in pop culture discussions while seemingly withdrawing from the limelight.

I'm not too sure what possessed me to listen to this album but I'm quite glad I did. Unfortunately many of these songs feel very "same-y" and touch on the same themes with the same sound back to back at times, however what did sound the same was fairly decent songs and the subject matter always felt as if it was personal to Shawn.

I'm not a big fan of folk/country sounds, however I appreciate that it is a big adjustment for Shawn and respect that he chose to do something that felt more personal to him over continuing to make music that attempts to recapture his biggest hits.

Favorite Songs:

1. Why Why Why

You know what, I respect him being honest about being confused about his place in the world. Definitely gives the vibes of someone that's had a venting at a county bar. Good for him.

2. The Mountain

Oh tea. I didn't expect him to make a slow dance song about taking drugs, seeing aliens and then venting about other people's opinions on him. We see you and that potentially bisexual reading.

3. Hallelujah

It's a great song. No wonder it gets so many covers. I wouldn't say this one is a stand out but it's a sweet album closure. Maybe Shawn should do a cover album. I would have put this at number 1, however I don't think that would be fair when it is a pretty popular covered song.
